History of Fakery and Deception in Photography




In todays lesson we looked at the invention of fakery in photoghrapy and it is so shocking! Fakery in photography has been practised since 1860s. The first one recorded in history was the picture of Abraham Lincoln, there have been futher photo fakerys after that. we also looked at different examples of fake photography, the effect of cropping and resizing picture which can give a picture an entirely different meaning. towards the end of the lesson we looked at a picture of an earthquake in italy, listed out denotations and conotations.

Semiotics & Representation

Representation: Something that works in the absence of "the real" thing.
Semiotics: is the study of sign systems. In media, media text are taken apart and deconstructed to show meaning.
Context: The situation in which a person views something.
Media text: things studied in media .e.g video, audio, newspaper.
Codes: group of signs put together to make meaning.
Meaning is encoded in a media text and the audience decodes and interprets it when they understand it.

Signifier Signified
SIGN
Signifier is the message - Signified is the meaning taken from it.

Others-
Concensus: amount of people that agree.
Bias: one sided, one p.o.v
P.O.V: point of view ( for people who dont understand)
Denotation: meaning of something, to list what you see.
Conotation: with a particular context, something that cues or comes to mind. An idea or something associated to the word.

Basics

Today we learnt about the early days of photography, the obscura, apeture and shutter. We watched a video called the genius of photography and the process of photography with a camera in similarity with the way the eye captures images and inverts tthe image while the brain turns it around the other way so we see the image straight the same way with the camera and the apeture
